Musician Spotlight Worst Sumo

Worst Sumo is the solo project of Princeton area musician Andy Ciardella. Ciardella has been diligently developing this project since 2018 releasing music over the course of 2019 and a collection of singles back in February. Worst Sumo is going all-in with another release the Cheerleader EP. The self-produced EP will be released to Bandcamp on May 8th. 2 Singles from the anticipated release are already available on Bandcamp “Sharks” & “Cheerleader. Sharks begin with muted percussion and in introductory blasé guitar riff, as relaxed subdued vocals pour over the chill subtleness melody, drones in the verses add tension which is resolved by the tranquil beat.

Cheerleader makes interesting use of a drum beat you would expect to hear in a trap song combined with new-wave reminiscent tones and themes of dispassion as the chorus repeats “You’re not a god barely a king so why do I want to hear every note you sing?”  The song resolves with some unique vocalization over the relaxing instrumentation. Andy who is a radio show host on WPRB Princeton cites Elvis Costello, Courtney Barnett & SOPHIE as influences. The follow up to the well-received worst singles, The Cheerleader EP blends musical stylings of some of these influences.

Due to sheltering in place Worst Sumo plans to host a digital tour in support of the Cheerleader EP. This tour will take place on their Instagram account. This Friday 05.01.20 Worst Sumo will be appearing on Wallace Petreuzzio’s (@wallacepetruziello) “Sweet Sounds of Social Distancing Show” live on Instagram. This show will also feature music from Mnemonic Advice, Ben Morris, Cheyenne Waltz, and more. The digital show which is in celebration of Wallace’s birthday begins at 7:00 P.M. Friday May 1st. “Sharks” & “Cheerleader” are both available for purchase of 1$ or more. The Cheerleader EP will be available on Bandcamp on May 8th!
