Make $100 on Spotify This Weekend

In their efforts to support the global music community during this unprecedented global health crisis, widely popular music streaming service Spotify is offering a new feature that allows artists to direct their listeners to donate. Spotify announced this week it has launched the Spotify COVID-19 Music Relief project aimed at providing financial relief for artists worldwide. Spotify will be matching donations up to 10 million dollars to the following music organizations MusiCares, PRS Foundation, Help Musicians, Unison Benevolent Fund, and Centre National de la Musique all organizations managing Covid19 relief efforts.

Spotify has partnered with CashApp, GoFundMe, PayPal, and any verified music relief organization. Artists will be able to feature these donation options on their profiles and direct their fans towards donating to them directly or an organization of their choosing. CashApp has established a $1 Million Dollar relief fund for musicians and is offering $100 to every artist who uses CashApp as their preferred fundraising method and receives at least one payment of $1.00 or more. The fund will be deposited after 30 days into eligible accounts, find out how to make $100 this weekend.

Spotify, a company that has fallen under scrutiny for not giving artist fair payments, seems to be taking a proactive approach during the pandemic; the intent of the company to pay artists their fair share still appears to remain an afterthought. Although musicians appreciate a feature to be paid or raise funds directly this perhaps should have been a feature from Spotify’s inception. This feature comes as a response to COVID-19 and enables artists to support themselves directly or causes they care about. Fighting the impact of the pandemic on the music industry will take a colossal world effort; to support artists impacted by Covid-19 consider purchasing their music directly.
