Sarah Sawchuk | Comedian Interview

We sat down with Colorado Springs based comedian Sarah Sawchuk following her comedy set at Persephone Grae’s In Manitou Springs Colorado. Persephone Grae’s Cafe hosted an all woman comedy showcase as part of the Manitou Springs Comedy Festival. 

The brunch showcase, a perfect occasion for mimosas, consisted of all women comedy; something that Sarah says is a rarity in the comedy scene. The ladies brought the laughs to downtown Manitou Springs on Sunday afternoon, the final day of the 3 day comedy festival. 

Sarah Sawchuk’s comedy is based on dramatized versions of real life scenarios with an improvisational twist. Drawing from life experiences such as dating, morbid curiosity, and uhm… balls, Sarah entertains crowds all along the front range. 

The showcase entitled, Brunch Thots, at Persephone Grae’s was hosted by Samara Suomi & Nina Davis. Following the showcase there was a live taping of the podcast Negative Thots with hosts Samara and Nina. 

Featured on the showcase lineup was Sarash Sawchuk, Rebecca Wilson & Hannah Jones all of whom brought their unique comedy style to the stage at Persephone Grae’s. The showcase also featured a number of guests in between our featured comedians. 

Sarah’s keys to comedy success = confidence, watch and learn, try open mics, maintain an ego towards your jokes. 

“If you’re hesitant to start just watch and observe” says Sarah. Open mics are a great way to test out jokes; but even if you tell a joke that bombs at an open mic doesn’t necessarily mean the joke is bad. If you believe in the joke it can be workshopped or told in a different way that resonates with an audience. 

Community is a huge part of the comedy scene in Colorado Springs and beyond. To that end Sarah Sawchuk has created a comedy booking directory for women and POC artists. After spending 7 years in the male dominated comedy sphere Sarah has created a booking directory to uplift women, POC and queer folks in comedy. The directory is aimed at taking the guesswork out of booking comedians by including their rate, location and type of comedy style. 

Community has the foundational understanding that the community is here for their craft. Praising community and collaboration over competition Sarah Sawchuck believes in the power of mutual support within the comedy community.
