September rolls in, the air coosl just ever so slightly, the days are just a tad bit shorter, the fall vibes are here and that can only mean one thing…zombies. That’s right it’s officially spooky season and out music video of the month Faerret’s Consumer Core is the perfect video to skyrocket you into Halloweentown.

We’ve had this one picked out for awhile and we’re super excited to share this video with you all. If you’re not already familiar, Ferret is a Houston originated-Colorado Springs-based electro-pop solo project whose live performances are characterized by pulsating house drums, funky 80’s style electric guitar, and of course, Faerrets’ unmistakable live looping style. Liver lopping is not a small thing to pull off, it means every drum hit, every riff, every layer you hear in a Faerret track was built in real time by one person. It’s a live-EDM approach that separates a real performer from a laptop set, and it’s a big part of why Faerret has built such a loyal little corner of the internet.

Faerret’s “Consumer Core” is our Music Video of the Month, and it’s exactly the kind of unhinged, high-concept chaos we started this blog to celebrate in the first place.

Consumer Core dropped August 14th as a standalone single, and it wastes no time getting to the point. Underneath the funk and the drums, this is a song about American consumerism, and the video makes that message impossible to miss: it plays out like a straight-up horror movie, with a swarm of zombies, staring at their phones, filming the latest social media challenge and closing in on a single victim. It’s a blunt metaphor, sure, but blunt is kind of the point. Consumerism doesn’t creep, it swarms, it is all encompassing. There is no escape to consumerism and this message leans all the way in.

What we love about this one is that it never feels preachy nor virtue signaling. The horror-movie framing does the heavy lifting so the song itself is free to just groove, and that contrast, gnarly visuals paired with genuinely fun, danceable production, is where Faerret’s sense of humor really shines through.

The music video was directed by Faerret himself with Rhett Gelles serving as directory of photography. Featuring colorado springs based comedian Justin Leger it is clear everyone involved had a lot of fun making it and that’s unfortunately rarer than it should be in the current indie music landscape.
