The Name Behind the Music

“My artist name is Chewdo Ju, though I’ve been thinking about rebranding to just ‘Chew.’ It’s how I introduce myself to people—it’s even tatted on my arm,” he says. Chew doesn’t fit neatly into a single box when it comes to the rap genre. “I don’t think I’m too much rap or too much R&B. I like to blend both to create a vibe.”

Roots and Musical Growth

Although Chew is not originally from Harrisburg, PA, he considers the city his home, having lived there since he was three. “I was raised by a lot of women who listened to a wide variety of music, and that really influenced me,” he reflects. “I started with poetry, and a friend suggested I put a beat behind it. Boom, bang—I started rapping.” His journey has not been easy. “My early music was nothing compared to where I am now,” he admits. “I’ve experienced significant growth.”

The Creative Process

Chew’s process begins with melodies. “I’m a big melody guy. I’ll hum, mumble, or even whistle to start building a song. The hook or chorus comes easiest to me—I have a knack for it.” One production technique he loves is layering vocals. “It adds depth and helps create the vibe I’m going for.”

Thoughts on the Live Music Scene

Chew is candid about the challenges of performing in a smaller city. “The live music scene here is very scarce. There aren’t many opportunities, and it’s more about popularity than the actual art,” he explains. “It’s hard to get people to come out if you’re not already ‘that guy’ in the city.”

Local Collaborations and Influences

Despite the challenges, Harrisburg has a vibrant underground scene that inspires Chew. His favorite local artists include Zay Wuap, Genuiz, and Drewtryell. He has had the best time collaborating with Zay Wuap, Lodi, and Keyzus.

Highlighting “Dosage”

Chew’s 2024 single, “Dosage,” provides a captivating introduction to his artistry, showcasing his unique musical approach. The track evokes the sonic landscapes created by artists like Don Tolliver and Kid Cudi, blending hip-hop and melodic experimentation elements. Its submerged and rowdy vibes create an intriguing atmosphere, while the intricate layers of sound draw listeners into Chew’s enchanting world. The collaboration with Drewtyrell adds a dynamic contrast, punctuating the song with a vibrant energy that beautifully complements Chew’s more subdued, introspective tones. This combination sets the stage for an immersive journey through Chew’s dreamy discography.
