6 Releases to Buy This Bandcamp Friday

As you likely already know Bandcamp has been providing musicians with their own little form of economic relief by intermittently choosing days to waive all fees since the start of the pandemic; giving 100% of sales directly to the artist. Here are 6 hot releases all of which you should consider purchasing via Bandcamp this Friday, March 5th.

Shalfi – Morioh

FFO: Yvette Young, Polyphia, Ichika Nito

Shalfi is one of the most unique artists out there right now putting a very distinct spin on math-inspired neo-soul music, these song structures are sure to amaze. Boasting chops amongst other elites such as Yvette Young, Tim Henson & Ichika Nito – Shalfi needs to be on your radar this Bandcamp Friday.

3 releases are available for purchase on Shalfis Bandcamp and Shalfis latest single On Memory of Time and Passage is available on Spotify. Moriah, the most recent of which was mastered by Marcos Mena of Standards.

Faetooth – …An Invocation

FFO: Kylesa, Gina Gleason, Gouge Away

All-woman doom band, Faetooth, from Los Angeles brings the noise with their debut 2019 release “…An Invocation”. Self-proclaimed Fairy Doom band, Faetooth, has been on the scene since spring 2019, often describing their sound as experimental doom/doom gaze.

The band is composed of Razz – Guitar, Ari – Guitar, Jenna – Bass, and Sarah – Drums all of whom share an interest in working with BIPOC musicians and underrepresented groups.

The Muslims – Gentrified Chicken

FFO: The Dicks, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys

The Muslims are a punk trio hailing from Durham, North Carolina whose music follows in the footsteps of the best 80’s hardcore groups. Tearing it up since at least 2017 this band has a harsh sound and a clear message, “death to all racist, bigot, pieces of shit”.

Made up of three Black and Brown queer Muslim members, their latest full-length album, Gentrified Chicken, The Muslims tackle issues that are increasingly prevalent in this day and age: religious persecution, systemic racism, police violence, the war on drugs, and much more. Plus, and this is a very big added plus, they remind us that it’s always en vogue to punch a nazi.

Mr. and the Mrs. – Seaside

FFO: The Butthole Surfers, Death From Above 1979, The Addicts

The Mr. and the Mrs. bring that classic surf punk energy with their 2020 double single release entitled Seaside. Showcasing two tubular surf-rock-inspired tracks this duo packs an aggressive punch with this release.

A deeper dive further into their discography which notably reveals their 2019 full-length release Look Ma No Microphone (yup, you guessed it it’s all instrumental). Although this release may lack the typical vocal element of their sound this release will have you bobbing your head and tapping your foot for song after catchy rhythmic song.

Johnny Knollwood & The Church of Mad love – Love is Over

FFO: Greta Van Fleet, Wolfmother, Them Crooked Vultures

Nj-based Johnny Knollwood & The Church of Mad Love is keeping the spirit of rock n roll alive and well. Releasing their album on April 20th 2020 these tunes will put you right back in the classic rock and roll era with it’s own distinct edge.

Johnny Knollwood is not only the band leader but also a purveyor of shows, most recently booking socially distant shows at Claremont Distillery in Fairfield NJ. Follow his page Johnny Knollwood Presents for upcoming performances.

Proper. – I Spent the Winter Writing Songs About Getting Better

FFO: The Wonder Years, Meet Me @ The Altar, The Sonder Bombs

Okay, so I Spent the Winter Writing Songs About Getting Better was released back in 2019, but the most recent single by pop-punk trio Proper., “Don’t,” was released in December 2020 and reminded us how underappreciated this group is.

Based out of Brooklyn, Proper. tackles emo and pop-punk in a way that feels as fresh as it is honest. The band’s music is as beautiful sonically as it is lyrically, and you definitely won’t regret checking out their 14-track 2019 sophomore album.
