The Mendozaz: Pop Punk is Alive and Well in Canada
|Back in 2021, we covered The Mendozaz’s release of their album Up and at Them—check out that article here.
Let’s catch up with the band! Composed of Jonny, Michael, and Dic, The Mendozaz are still at it, stonger and better than ever. The Toronto based, self-proclaimed, manic nerdy punk trio, they’ve had an electrifying year already! With their album Loafers released on June 7, 2024, they continue to captivate audiences with their infectious energy and catchy music. The album has been celebrated for its captivating hooks and memorable melodies, solidifying their place in the pop-punk landscape.
On August 21st, they premiered the music video for “Pour One Out For Hot Sarah” on YouTube. This visual gives fans a taste of the throwback charm that The Mendozaz is known for. The track has quickly become a favorite, showcasing their knack for writing addictive choruses that stick in your head.
Additionally, the band received praise for their video for “Dapper Man,” released in March of 2023. Directed by Jason Romilly, the video explores themes of mistaken identity through a vibrant lens. This creative endeavor highlights their commitment to embracing whimsy in their art. Watch the video here.
This year saw The Mendozaz touring across Ontario, bringing their electrifying performances to fans throughout the province. They wowed audiences with their high-energy, catchy punk anthems.
As they continue to build momentum, The Mendozaz are poised to remain a force in the Canadian punk scene. On September 13th, they released their most recent single, “Queen Bee,” which may just be their catchiest song yet. It’s crisp and immediately got stuck in my head. If you love the movie Mean Girls and pop-punk, then The Mendozaz wrote this single for you. It sounds like it deserves to be the title track of a high school girl’s coming-of-age comedy.
On October 4th, they played at Handlebar in Toronto for the Mark Tom and Travis Cover Show, sharing the stage with Stuart and the Avenues, as well as Fast Eddie. They all played originals as well as covers of Blink-182 and Green Day. Now that sounds like the kind of show where you really feel the nostalgia of the early 00s Warped Tour!
For a moment, let’s step back into their earlier discography. It’s officially spooky season, and The Mendozaz have some perfect songs for your Halloween playlist. Be sure to add their tracks “Murder” and “Slasher.” They capture that campy horror style with a high-speed beat in a very pop-punk way. It gives me Jennifer’s Body vibes, and I am so into it!
Keep an eye on their social media for where they’ll be playing next! You don’t want to miss this band that brings us new music with the original pop-punk feel.
