Grampfather | Laugh Lines | The 7th Album
|The cool, calm, collected psychedelic-indie rockers in Grampfather recently released their 7th album—that’s right, 7 of them! The new album entitled Laugh Lines was released on April 26th, 2024. It was self-recorded by the band’s bassist Jake Offermann at his home studio/DIY venue Terrapin Kitchen located in the band’s hometown of Kingston, NY. The album was written, mixed, and produced by the band’s singer, guitarist, and synth player, James Kwapisz, with production help from Offermann. The band also features Tony DiMauro on drums and Andrew Blot on lead guitar.
The indie-psych inspired band from Kingston is a 4-piece band that has honed their sound through years of dedication and commitment to their craft. Known for ripping up the Hudson Valley DIY scene, Grampfather offers listeners their own distinct take on psychedelic-surf rock.
Combining elements of blues rock guitar coated in their signature surf-garage rock sound, Laugh Lines creates a distinct, stylistic listening experience. The new record is a sonic adventure through the many offerings of indie-rock. Seamlessly blending influences from many areas of independent rock, Grampfather has concocted an album that has something for everyone—such as the guitar solo on “McBushwick Strut” for guitarists and the chill danceability of “Clip Art Rose” for indie rockers everywhere.
The new album Laugh Lines is a transcendent experience through sounds, space, and time, with many songs each holding their own unique place within the psychedelic-rock genre, maintaining a thematic scheme throughout the album, and keeping the listener guessing what turn the song will take next.
Grampfather cleverly builds tension in some songs only to be relieved by that sweet indie-rock style resolution. The modulation and effects give certain songs that needed pop you don’t find in other similar sounding indie rock. Grampfather has truly outdone themselves with their 7th record.
“Rot in Bliss,” originally released in 2023 as a single, is featured as the opening track of the album. Tracks 3 and 4, “In Your Bones” and “Dredging,” were also previously released as singles. Check out the music video for “Dredging,” made by the band’s art director, Julia Howard, who also created the album’s front and back cover art. And finally, the album closes with the triumphant “Complete Contentment,” the perfect closer to this epic musical journey.
Since founding the band over a decade ago, Grampfather has released a variety of music under the general rock umbrella while staying true to their original psychedelic-surf sound. With genre influences and sounds ranging from psychedelic, garage, surf, indie rock to even thrash metal, Grampfather has a deep catalog for music lovers to enjoy.
