August 2026 Playlist Roundup | Mad Indie Media

August is here, and along with it is a fresh batch of new indie music spinning in our monthly rotation. From Essex UK math-rock to Nashville folk-pop, Washington D.C. punk to Cape Cod indie, this month’s playlist is a cross-continental snapshot of indie music making something that feels honest. Here’s a rundown of everyone featured this month.

Hank Heaven

New York City singer-songwriter Hank Heaven has been building a compelling catalog in indie folk-rock, and 2026 is shaping up to be their biggest year yet. Their most recent full release, Loaded Dice (2024), featured a standout Beach Bunny collaboration called Beloved, and now they’re following it up with the new Welterweight EP, due out August 14th via Nice Life Recording Company. The project is produced by Phil Weinrobe (Adrienne Lenker, Big Thief) and  two singles have already been released: our music video of the month Thread and the conversational, string-swelled I Wanna Be Your Man. Heaven has toured and played sessions with the likes of Samia, Del Water Gap, and Gus Dapperton, and will celebrate the Welterweight release with a show at Church Street Boxing Gym in New York on August 15th.

Big In Sheboygan

Essex math-rock four-piece Big In Sheboygan returned in January 2026 with Nuzzle, their long-awaited follow-up to 2019’s Nathaniel, and it has been in heavy rotation here at Mad Indie Media ever since. The band consists of Pete Baker and Mat Gilbert on guitars, Ben O’Connor on bass, and Paul Saward on drums. Big In Sheboygan creates instrumental music that’s joyful, melodic, and somehow perfectly absurd, with track titles like “I’m A Biscuit and the King of All Sharks” and “Shush Your Mush (or I’ll Push You in a Bush)” keeping things wonderfully weird. Mixed by Adam Edwards at Community Noise and mastered by Ed Rome at Slam Door Studios, Nuzzle is a warm, confident leap forward for one of the UK underground’s most endearing bands.

Snailmate

Phoenix-based duo Snailmate comprised of synth wizard and lyricist Kalen Lander alongside drummer Bentley Monet make music that practically demands its own genre classification; or in other words, genre fluid. Sitting somewhere between synthpunk, grindcore pop,  and nerd rap, the pair and their healthy dose of wit are making something truly unique. They’ve performed over a thousand shows and built a devoted following on the strength of their frenetic, inclusive live performances. Their most recent releases include the 2026 single I Don’t Feel Good, the 2025 collab Masking (featuring Myles Bullen), and the 2024 single “Decompose In Your Basement.” Snailmate are a touring band at heart and regularly hit the road, and they will be taking that energy along with them as they move to Europe. Keep an eye out upcoming posts for an interview with the band at their recent appearance at Compost Heap Music Festival in Denver last month.

charleyhorse

charleyhorse is an indie rock project that makes the kind of music that burrows in quietly, makes itself comfortable and stays awhile. Featured on the playlist with tracks from their recent stretch and leech releases, the project blends low-key alt-rock textures with a restless, searching energy. THE HERETICS

Cambridge-born alt-rock outfit THE HERETICS are turning heads fast, fusing the unapologetic energy of ’90s and 2000s pop-punk with a clean, modern production edge. Kerrang called them “when modern meets nostalgia,” and it’s hard to argue. Their 2025 debut single Bends & Breaks put them on the map across the UK indie rock community, and their 2026 follow-up Tidal Waves described by other reviewers as reminiscent of late-90s pop-punk at its most anthemic. Drawing from a well of influences that includes Taking Back Sunday, Green Day, Neck Deep, and The Gaslight Anthem, the band has been pressing their music to vinyl and playing spots like Cambridge Rock Festival, Balstock, and Deepdale Festival. A busy summer of 2026 is underway, watch their socials for upcoming dates.

R-NØT

From the suburban reaches of Washington D.C., R-NØT is a high-energy punk-inspired rock three-piece built to unleash punky, chunky, and highly melodic tunes that conjure up your inner angsty teenager. Their 2026 EP Gaslighter // Part 1 is the latest dispatch from the band, a collection of tracks that hits with the velocity of early 2000s punk while keeping things fresh. Fans of Rise Against, Propagandhi, and scrappy D.C. DIY punk will find a lot to love here. We loved the album art for this one too, there’s something so appealing about a car on fire. Keep tabs on them via Bandcamp for new material and show announcements.

Imperial Motors

Imperial Motors make art-rock that thinks hard and feels heavy. Their 2026 release Charlie Don’t Surf is their most ambitious statement yet. Other reviewers have compared Freeloader to the ‘Helicopter’-era Bloc Party and The Futureheads. Riled-up and excited in the best possible way is a fun way to describe their sound in their most recent release.  Infinite Money Glitch closes the record with the kind of layered, contextual storytelling that rewards repeat listens, with lyrical lines deepening upon further listens. The band is conscious about what they make and why they make it, with a Linktree page that links directly to Palestinian relief alongside their music. Worth your full attention.

Florian and the Better Hand

Florian and the Better Hand make folk-adjacent indie pop that wraps itself around you like a warm sweater on a cold day. Their recent single A.N.S.H. (AI needs some help) is a topical and quietly brilliant concept piece. A song about human-machine collaboration delivered through banjo, fingerpicked acoustic guitar, and warm baritone vocals, using the most human-sounding arrangement the band could build to say what it needed to say. Their 2026 output also includes Wheel Back, MANy, and a new single Mother, all pointing toward an artist with a deeply thoughtful approach to songwriting. mia van de loo

Massachusetts-born singer-songwriter mia van de loo released her debut EP open book in December 2023, and recently caught our attention. Drawing comparisons to Dodie, early Clairo, and Cavetown, she makes intimate indie-folk-pop built around ukulele, layered vocals, and a poetic conversational lyricism that feels both immediate and achingly sincere. Tracks Fairytale and Lullaby both from Open Book  are like reading someone else’s diary entries, an intimate peek into someone’s story. . A summer tour has been in the works, so check her Instagram and TikTok for upcoming dates.

Anna Belt

Nashville rising artist Anna Belt is a Belmont University songwriter who occupies a rich space between indie rock, folk, and Americana. Drawing inspiration from Stevie Nicks, Maggie Rogers, Linda Ronstadt, and Bonnie Raitt, Ana belt has crafted a distinct sound for fans of country, rock and folk. Her 2026 double single THE HEAT includes Burning With Desire, a passionate, emotionally vulnerable track that earned her recognition as one of Music City’s most promising emerging artists. She brings both craft and conviction to her performances, and if Burning With Desire is any measure, the best is still ahead of her. Follow her on her socials and keep an eye out for live dates in and around Nashville.

Full Disclosure rounds out this month’s playlist with two tracks song for taylor and The Devil and while details on the band are still emerging, the music speaks for itself. Full Disclosure is early-stage and worth watching.
