Natalie and The Monarchy – Envy The Villian – Music Video of the Month
Envy The Villain is the decadently evil new single from Liverpool’s Natalie and the Monarchy. Electrifying bass lines and captivating, creepily delivered lyrics drive this devilish new tune. The drum and guitar accent the natural rhythm of this song and bridges and choruses are peppered with tasteful piano licks creating an alluring and sinful sound.
Our video opens with our subject struggling to put a cassette in a player. It’s revealed she is blindfolded, setting the dark cabaret theme both stylistically and in the song’s sound. Littered with light occultism this video draws the viewer in with satanic thematics, seductive singing and enticing visuals to be enjoyed.
The American-born, United Kingdom-based artist Natalie and the Monarchy have been releasing their riot grrl-inspired music since as early as 2019. Dropping the music video for Envy the Villain in April 2021, its kitschy visuals are reminiscent of a low-budget slasher film which makes it a fantastic choice for our Music Video of the Month.
When the chorus drops this song is really kicked up into high gear. At first listen, we wouldn’t have second-guessed it if you told us this was an Amanda Palmer song. The voice, drums, and distorted guitar erupt into harmonious splendor while the piano and bass decorate the chorus accenting the singers’ range and ability.
We’ve been noticing a theme in recent videos of attractive lead singers absolutely devouring some cake. This isn’t the first video we have covered that involved just totally demolishing some cake. I suppose if human sacrifice isn’t an option some cake will do. All jokes aside Natalie and The Monarchy know how to get down in this clever video.
If you did not catch Natalie and the Monarchy at their recent Friday the 13th Soiree in Future Yard in Birkenhead you can listen to Natalie and the Monarchy on Spotify & Bandcamp. Follow Natalie and the Monarchy on Instagram and Facebook for upcoming shows and new releases.
