Vater’s Vibrators, no, Not the Sex Toy
|Vater’s Vibrators is the cleverly named noise outfit from NNJ scene veteran & noise maker, Vater Boris; the bass player of the established avant-pop band Will Wood & The Tapeworms as well as the purveyor of the low end in the doom/harsh noise band Deja Gravy.
The astonishing new release, at certain points, has us scratching our heads and asking is this really the same guy? Since December 24th, 2020 Vaters Vibrators has been releasing music to their Bandcamp listing songs for $1,000 and up. The page itself explicitly asks listers “…Please don’t buy this for $1,000.”
The lofi low-budget mystique of this release adds to the uniqueness of its sounds; being entirely self-produced using at-home equipment some sounds will shock you, others will lull you away and some may even have you polka 2-stepping. the latest release from Vater’s Vibrators sounds like a cough syrup trip where you become the main character of an 8-bit video game also there are ghosts everywhere.
While some songs seem to be branching out into different genres and seemingly uncharted territory for Vater, other tracks are vaguely reminiscent of the badass and easily recognizable sounds of Deja Gravy.
After all, Vater is no stranger to creating some noise; the project Deja Gravy offers some heavy, noisy, sludgy, doomy, riffs, and his work in Will Wood & The Tape works employs more of a jazz/swing/avant-garde element.
There are subtle hints of the creepiness we are accustomed to hearing when listening to a Vater Boris project that can be found in this release but this is extremely different than anything put out from Will Wood & the Tapeworms or Deja Gravy.
We can hear the gloomy & thrash-like Dejagravy Influence on certain songs such as Wolfman’s Go-kart Track and possibly some Tapeworms influence on dark yet dancy tracks such as Igor’s Laser Tag Tournament but other tracks like Hunchback’s Surf Competition & The Mummy’s Opium Den Park 1: The Inhale aside from having super badass names are eccentric & quirky, and will leave you pleasantly surprised and even downright shocked at moments.
This dissonant & doldrum release which can best be described as a soundtrack to a low-budget indie horror film has us wondering what next is in store.
