Lung – an interview with operatic cello-metal rockers
|We met up with cello/drummer duo Lung ahead of their set at Lulu’s Downtown in beautiful COlorado Springs, COlorado. The experimental duo has seen stages all over the country drawing fans from different multiple genres to their gigs. The band is on tour with the very lively Dead Bob.
Lung is whole-heartedly unique in their stylistic music. Sitting in a denomination all their own, Lung seamlessly blends elements of classical music, metal, art-pop, and punk into their ecstatic live sets. Although cellist Kate Wikefileld says there are many cello bands out there, You will be hard-pressed to find a band similar to Lung.
With heavy percussive cello strokes paired with dramatic punchy drumming overlaid with at times operatic, sometimes jazzy and when the moment calls for it, harsh metal screaming Lung crafts songs incorporating all of their music loves into one. Lung can be described as avant-garde-operatic cello-metal with a riot-girl/punk twist. Drawing influences from artists such as PJ Harvey, Smart went Crazy and No Means No Lung plays and listens to a lot of interesting music.
This tour, which is a celebration of the drummer Daisy’s birthday is being played with Dead Bob spanned an entire month long and has seen many states and venues. Dead Bob consists of former members of No Means No; a band admired by Lung. The band will continue on after this tour playing shows on their own on their way back to their origin city Cincinnati where they will be playing the 4th of July Rock n Roll Carnival in the Northside of Cincinnati.
The band hopes to be back on the road in August with the band Now and are poised to again tour with Dead Bob this Fall. Don’t miss Lung at The Fest in Gainesville Florida this October.
While working on solo material and struggling to drum with her feet, Kate had collaborated with Drummer, Daisy (former bassist of Foxy Shazam) during a residency at a venue in Ohio with the band Bay Bridge. Since then the pair has been writing music together and touring extensively. Being as unique as they are, Lung finds themselves playing with bands from many genres.
Lung will return to Colorado on June 15th for a show at Blast & Scrap in Fort Collins. The band is also working on new material with a pending release date. Stay updated on that upcoming release, shows near you and all things Lung by visiting lungtheband.com.
