Scott Making Cents – Music Video of the Month

Let’s face it, it’s February and February is sad (sorry Aquarius & Pisces people; ya’ll were given a sad-ass month to be born). So when we’re sad here at Mad Indie Media there’s nothing like a good old comedy track to warm our cold dead hearts and remind us what it’s like to smile. That is exactly what Scott Making Cents delivers with their track “My Boyfriend’s in a Gang”.

This tongue and cheek song is complimented by what can only be described as an early internet hodgepodge of images and archaic animation which only adds to the hilarity of this song. The imagery and overall vibe of this video reminded me distinctly of a simpler time, the early(earlier) internet. While this is a comedy song, it is also a love story; so we are getting 2 heartwarming feelings in one with this music video of the month which is a big plus in my book.

I really dug the old candy store-type melody indicative of the Doo-Wop era used in this song; there’s a reason this is a classic sound. I absolutely died laughing when the singer mentions the full name of The Mario Cuomo Shared Use Path. It’s not a funny name but the fact that the entire name was used uninterrupted in the context of this song is the kind of dry humor that does it for me. There are a lot of interesting little anecdotes throughout this song just have a listen yourself and there’s guaranteed to be a line or two that will make you chuckle.

Scott Making Cents is a multi-instrumentalist, musician, and songwriter from NYC who specializes in comedic popular music and has been releasing music under this moniker since as early as 2019. Scott has also released other great songs such as Fuck Chick-Fil-A. The dry sense of humor in this track and deadpan delivery culminates to create something truly amazing that disrupts and challenges the notion of “serious” music.

Scott Making Cents has recently teased an upcoming release entitled “Jorts Songs for Jorts People” with video Abe’s Garden, a reworked version of a previous song. This album continues Scott’s artistic mission of challenging the status quo through comedic songs and challenging “serious” music. Scott also hopes to invoke discussions regarding Art vs. Content as many of these songs began their lives as social media posts.

Jorts Songs for Jorts People will be available on Bandcamp and all other major streaming services on 3/18/2022 and will include previously unreleased songs. Pre-save the album here.

FFO: They Might Be Giants, Ween, Jonathan Coulton, and Ben Folds.
